The mining industry can make use of the Linear Motor technology used for high-weight freight transportation in both short and long range applications. Linear Motor systems can be particularly effective for constantly moving systems at high forces providing high levels of performance, safety, control and efficiency.

Furthermore, extensive research has been done at places such as University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa on using linear motors to replace conventional rope systems in mineshaft elevators both for the movement of men and freight. The lack of a mechanical contact allows the systems to operate efficiently and safely at any gradient (including vertically).
