Linear Motors can provide solutions to a range of defense problems. Firstly through the movement of systems / freight in a controlled manner via highly automated systems that require minimal maintenance and human operation.

Linear Motors have also been developed by major defense companies in applications such as high - velocity rail guns. These make use of the high forces achievable by linear motors.

Research has also been conducted into the use of linear motors to launch aircraft thus making the space required to take off even shorter than that required to land. Traditionally aircraft require twice as much runway space to take off than to land. A linear motor launch system would reduce the space required for an operational runway thus potentially increasing throughput of current airfields and aircraft carriers.
